The founder
Ms (Dr) Sonia Ike BMBS MSc(Lond) MRCS(Eng) BMedSci(Hons) CertHE FHLA FInstLM was born and raised in Hackney, East London. She is a Registrar in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and studied Medicine at the University of Nottingham.
She successfully completed her Masters MSc in Health Policy, Planning & Financing at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Ms Ike was awarded the Healthcare Leadership Academy scholarship for 2018-19; has gone on to present her work at the House of Lords; and received national recognition in 2020 as one of ‘100 Women in Healthcare Leadership’.
She sits as a committee member for Women in Surgery (WinS) at the Royal College of Surgeons, England.
Ms Ike has keen interests in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, academia, health policy, and medical education. Her passions also lie in mentoring, quality improvement across healthcare, and outreach.
She taught and supervised medical students of the University of Cambridge. Alongside this, she has also undertaken several mentoring and leadership pursuits with organisations including the Social Mobility Foundation, African Family Support Foundation, and Springboard at the University of Nottingham. Ms Ike was a part of the team of doctors clinically reviewing all images submitted to Black & Brown Skin.
Her mottos are “Representation Matters” and “You cannot be who you cannot see”.
She sat on the Editorial Board for the award-winning 2020 issue of The BMJ highlighting racism in medicine.
Ms Ike is a firm believer of equality, diversity and inclusion in Medicine and Surgery, and strives to help influence change.
Outside of work, she is a skincare enthusiast, loves fitness/the gym, travelling, photography, literature and the arts.
